Columbia/Legacy RecordingsBruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne appear on the soundtrack album of the new documentary The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash. It’s premiering this Monday on YouTube Originals after being screened at select film festivals earlier this year.
The soundtrack, which was released today, features the original music score created for the movie by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, blended with interview soundbites from Johnny Cash, Springsteen, Browne, June Carter Cash, Loretta Lynn and others.
Bruce is featured in a segment called “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning” in which he comments about the set Cash played at his famous 1968 Folsom Prison concert.
“[It] was a combination of sin and salvation,” Springsteen notes. “That was the rule in country music: Saturday night, Sunday morning. Sunday morning was about repenting, repenting for the fun you had on Saturday night.”
Browne, meanwhile, is heard in a segment titled “Bitter Tears Revisited” that offers commentary about Cash’s 1964 concept album focusing about the plight of Native Americans.
The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash was directed by frequent Springsteen collaborator Thom Zimny, who utilized a bounty of rare archival interviews with Cash to create a profile of the country legend and his artistic triumphs, struggles with addiction, personal tragedies, spirituality and more.
Also in conjunction with The Gift, Johnny’s son, John Carter Cash collaborated with Zimny on a special playlist that features the soundtrack segments, along with a career-spanning selection of songs by Johnny.
As previously reported, on Sunday, November 10 — the eve of The Gift‘s YouTube premiere – a star-studded tribute show called Cash Fest will take place at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville. Check out full details at TheBestFest.com.
