Metallica mourns death of founder of first UK label

ABC/Randy HolmesMetallica is mourning the death of Martin Hooker, who founded the band’s first U.K. record label, Music for Nations.

In a tweet, the metal legends write that they’re “deeply saddened” by Hooker’s passing.

“Thanks to Martin’s unwavering support, [Kill ‘Em All], [Ride the Lightning] and [Master of Puppets] all went gold in the U.K.,” the statement continues. “Just as importantly, he and [Music for Nations] helped make England a warm and welcoming place for us at a vital time in our career. Thank you for the love, support and memories Martin, rest in peace.”

Hooker was also the first person to sign Twisted Sister, and Dee Snider has also shared his memories of working with him.

“He recorded & released Under the Blade and gave us just enough push to make it to Atlantic Records,” Snider explains. “Also, he caught a piece of fruit thrown at us at the Reading Festival on the fly…and ate it!”

Music for Nations also released music from bands including Slayer, Killswitch Engage, Megadeth and Tool, among many others.
