Omnivore RecordingsR.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and Luke Haines, frontman of the British ’90s alternative-rock band The Auteurs, have just released a new collaborative album titled Beat Poetry for Survivalists.
In an interview with the Portland Mercury, Buck reveals that the project came about after he contacted Haines to purchase a painting of Lou Reed by the U.K. musician and Luke suggested that they record together.
“I just started sending him [music],” Peter explains. “I’d go to [frequent collaborator] Scott McCaughey‘s basement and put down drum machine tracks, a couple of guitars. Maybe Scott would put down bass and keyboards. We’d send it off and a week later, he’d send it back…We never met until the record was mastered.”
The album is available now on CD, vinyl and digitally.

This month is quite a busy one for Buck. This past Wednesday, he made a surprise appearance at Black Crowes members Chris and Rich Robinson‘s Brothers of a Feather acoustic concert in Portland, Oregon, and on March 27, another new side project featuring Peter, The No Ones, will release its debut record, The Great Lost No Ones Album.
Buck joined the Robinsons during their show’s finale for renditions of R.E.M.’s “7 Chinese Bros.” and The Velvet Underground‘s “Femme Fatale.”
As for The Lost Ones, the group also features McCaughey and two members of the Norwegian band I Was a King. In addition, the album, which was recorded in 2017, includes guest appearances by The Bangles‘ Debbi Peterson and Drive-By Truckers‘ Patterson Hood, among others.
