Credit: Richard KerrisTodd Rundgren is gathering together a variety of fellow music stars to record a new version of his 1973 anthem “Just One Victory” that he plans to allow Democratic candidates running for office this year to use for their campaigns for free.
So far, the artists who’ve committed to taking part in the project include Joe Walsh, Daryl Hall, Paul Shaffer and acclaimed producer/musician Don Was.
“Everyone is trying to figure out what they can do to get that maniac out of the White House,” Rundgren, an outspoken critic of President Trump, told Rolling Stone during a recent phone interview. “More importantly, to get the banana Republican Party out of governing wherever possible. The song will be available to any Democratic candidate that’s been approved by the DNC to use at for campaigns and at their rallies. They can also use it in a commercial if they so desire.”
Todd also revealed that he’s hoping he can get many more music artists and celebrities to agree to contribute to the recording.
“Let’s go for ‘We Are the World,'” he said. “Not many people know about it at this particular moment, especially because just as we were getting into the project this huge distraction [of the coronavirus] came along.”
Rundgren, who currently is holed up at his home on the Hawaiian island of Kauai during the coronavirus crisis, told Rolling Stone that he expects Was to play a big role in putting the track together.
“He and I will go over everything and figure out who goes best in which part of the song,” he noted. “But I don’t imagine that this project will be finished or nearing completion until June or so.”
“Just One Victory” was the final song on Todd’s 1973 studio album, A Wizard, a True Star.
