Courtesy of AXS TVOn this Sunday’s episode of Sammy Hagar‘s AXS TV series Rock & Roll Road Trip, the Red Rocker visits Ted Nugent at the veteran guitar slinger’s ranch in Waco, Texas, where the two musicians rock out and also share some outdoor adventures.
The show’s highlights include the Nuge giving Hagar an archery demonstration, taking Sammy for a wild off-road ride in his souped-up 1974 Bronco and jamming out on some classic Little Richard tunes.
Hagar tells ABC Audio that he thinks the episode will help people see Nugent — whose outspoken political views seem to rub many the wrong way — “in a different light.”
“Everyone thinks [Ted is] like this redneck, belligerent, right-wing guy. He’s not,” Sammy declares. “He’s a nature boy, man. He’d just say, ‘Hey man, just let me go…hunt my own food, grow my own food, have my own land.’ He’s, like, a free man.”
As for the jam segment of the show, Hagar says Nugent “just took over.”
“He played ‘Cat Scratch Fever’…Ah, he just went nuts,” Sammy notes. “Then he starts playing Little Richard, ‘Jenny Take a Ride’ into ‘Long Tall Sally’…He just took over. So, we had to cut him off eventually, ’cause Ted, he’s not one of them guys that kind of goes along with the program. He jumps in, and he kind of is the program.” (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)
The episode also features Nugent sharing memories about how he created the guitar solo to his classic song “Stranglehold,” discussing why he thinks living a life of sobriety has been one of his secrets to being happy, talking about how James Brown influenced his musical style and singing the praises of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
