Credit: Kate IzorRoger Waters is missing playing with his backing group while on lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so he got most of the band members together virtually for a new video performance that’s been posted on the founding Pink Floyd singer/bassist’s original YouTube channel and social media sites.
The black-and-white clip shows Waters and the other musicians playing an inspired version of the 1979 Pink Floyd tune “Mother,” from The Wall. Joining Waters in the video are Jonathan Wilson and Dave Kilmister on guitar, Gus Seyffert on bass, Jon Carin on keyboards, Joey Waronker on drums and Lucius members Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig on backing vocals. Wolfe and Laessig are the only ones who apparently are quarantining together.
At the end of the clip, Waters gives a shout-out to the musicians while noting that sax player Ian Ritchie is absent because there’s no saxophone part on the song. He also declares, “We should do this again, right?!”
The video is accompanied by a message from Roger that reads, “Social distancing is a necessary evil in Covid world. Watching ‘Mother’ reminds me just how irreplaceable the joy of being in a band is.”
Waters recently announced the postponement of his 2020 This Is Not a Drill Tour, although no new dates have been scheduled yet. Roger said in a recent Facebook post, “I have every intention of going out next year starting in July, in fact, I shall be monumentally disappointed if, for whatever reason, we can’t. We’ll all have to just wait and see.”
