The Pretenders have debuted another song from their upcoming studio album, Hate for Sale, which will be released on July 17. The tune, “Didn’t Want to Be This Lonely,” is available now as a digital single and via streaming services.
The rocking, Bo Diddley-inspired track features frontwoman Chrissie Hynde expressing mixed feelings about a breakup.
You also can check out a companion lyric video for the tune at The Pretenders’ official YouTube channel. The clip, which was put together while the band members are self-quarantining because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is designed like a comic book come to life, with Hynde and the other musicians appearing in separate panels.
“Didn’t Want to Be This Lonely” is the fifth song from Hate for Sale that’s released in advance of the record — along with the title track, “The Buzz,” “You Can’t Hurt a Fool” and “Turf Accountant Daddy.”
You can pre-order Hate for Sale now.
In other news, Hynde has been recording a series of Bob Dylan songs with Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne, and has been posting accompanying videos for the cover tunes on The Pretenders’ YouTube channel. So far, Hynde and Walbourne have debuted their renditions of four tunes as part of their “Dylan Lockdown Series” — “Sweetheart Like You,” “Standing in the Doorway,” “You’re a Big Girl Now” and “In the Summertime.”
Hynde co-wrote all of the songs on Hate for Sale with Walbourne.
