Credit: Jeremy SafferMegadeth is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, but the thrash icons won’t be slowing down anytime soon. In fact, bassist David Ellefson tells ABC Radio that the band is currently “working on new material.”

“[We’re] collecting riffs and lyrics and ideas,” Ellefson says.

The new music will follow Megadeth’s 2016 album, Dystopia, which was a big success for the band: It debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200, and the title track won the band its first Grammy award after 11 previous nominations.

“We’re thrilled that our fans loved Dystopia so much,” Ellefson says. “I think it kinda reframed who Megadeth is now, and it’s nice to have a baseline of what our fans really like from us.”

He adds, “We made a lot of records over a lot of years, and a lot of things have changed. So it’s nice to be able to have Dystopia to point toward as something that’s kinda the new gold standard for Megadeth.”

Megadeth will be celebrating its 35th anniversary throughout the year with special videos, releases and events. The band also will be touring Europe throughout the summer.
