Gutt, who was officially introduced as STP’s new singer last November, is the third person to front the grunge vets, following the late Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington. As Gutt tells Yahoo, he was actually good friends with Bennington.

“I’ve known Chester since 2001,” Gutt says. “I was in a band called Dry Cell, and we were signed by the same guy that signed Linkin Park, so that’s how I knew him. He would come to some of our writing sessions and rehearsals; I’d see him in the studios that we were at. When we were recording, they’d be recording there. We just had a good friendship.”

Bennington was actually in the audience when Gutt first performed with Stone Temple Pilots at a secret show back in 2016. When Bennington died last July, Gutt remembers that he “needed a couple of days.”

“I’m actually the same age as Chester,” Gutt says. “It was a shocker. I mean, I feel for his family and kids and his wife. It’s horrible.”

At that time, STP were deep into recording the new album, and Gutt and his new band mates were able to channel their grief into their music.

“I remember I just wanted to hide, but we went in the studio and some beautiful, beautiful songs were made,” Gutt says. “And they’re real. That’s the best part.”

The new Stone Temple Pilots album will be released on March 16.
