Kevin Mazur/WireImage for Rock and Roll Hall of FameWhen Journey was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last April, Neal Schon had the opportunity to reconnect with the group’s former lead singer Steve Perry, who made a rare appearance with his old band mates at the ceremony. Schon told Rolling Stone at the time that he hoped the reunion could lead to a renewed friendship with Perry and perhaps even a new collaboration, but the guitarist reveals to ABC Radio the two haven’t seen each other since the 2017 event.
“He talked about having some coffee [together], and we have not gotten there,” Neal explains. “But, you know, I’m sure it’ll happen if it’s supposed to happen.”
Regardless of what happens in the future between Perry and him, Schon says he was happy he got to spend some time with his one-time musical compadre again.
“It was great seeing him,” Schon. “And it felt like so many years had not been in between us knowing each other, you know, or talking to each other. When we did finally talk, I felt we had a lot in common still.”
Neal tells ABC Radio that his favorite part of the Rock Hall ceremony was being “able to actually hang with” all the Journey members honored at the event, including original singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie and drummer Aynsley Dunbar, whom, he notes, “had a big part in building what we started with.”
He adds, “[I]f I had it my way, I would’ve opened it up, like all our fans wanted, and had every member that had ever contributed” take part in the event.
Schon, of course, keeps moving forward with the current Journey lineup, which will be hitting the road with Def Leppard for a major North American headlining tour kicking off May 21 in Hartford, Connecticut.
