Courtesy of Julien’s AuctionsThe previously reported Music Icons auction offering the first electric guitar George Harrison ever owned and a historic Fender Telecaster belong to The Band‘s Robbie Robertson takes place this Saturday, May 19, at the Hard Rock Café in New York City.
The sale, organized by Julien’s Auctions, will feature memorabilia from a wide variety of artists, and will be broken into two sessions, beginning at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET, respectively.
Harrison’s instrument is a Hofner Club 40 model that he acquired in 1959, and that he played frequently for several years. He gave up possession of the guitar in 1966, after Beatles manager Brian Epstein convinced him to donate it as the prize in a band competition promoting a Fab Four tour of Germany. It’s expected to sell for as much as $300,000.
Robertson’s guitar is a 1965 Fender Telecaster that both Robbie and Bob Dylan played on Bob’s historic “going electric” 1966 tour. It was also used during recording sessions for various albums by Dylan and The Band.
In addition, Robertson played the guitar with The Band at the Woodstock, Isle of Wight and Watkins Glen festivals, as well as other famous events. It’s estimated to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000.
Other high-priced collectibles going on the block include a 1963 Epiphone Granada guitar that Eric Clapton played while he was in The Yardbirds, a 1968 Telecaster custom-made for Elvis Presley, a set of lyrics to “Blowin’ in the Wind” handwritten by Dylan in 2011, a Jag-Stang guitar designed by Nirvana‘s Kurt Cobain, and a 1963 Beatles set list handwritten by Paul McCartney.
Meanwhile, a related Music Icons auction focusing exclusively on Prince-related items will take place today at 2 p.m. at the Hard Rock Café in New York.
