ABC/Randy HolmesIn Bradley Cooper‘s upcoming directorial debut A Star Is Born, the Hangover actor plays an aging musician named Jackson Maine, who takes a rising star named Ally, played by pop star Lady Gaga, under his wing, leading to romance and drama. None of that exactly screams “Metallica,” but apparently the thrash legends inspired Cooper’s approach to directing the film.
“I’m a huge fan of Metallica,” Cooper tells Variety. “About six years ago I was at a Metallica concert [standing behind the drum kit] and I saw the scope of it.”
“[I] thought, wow, this composition is incredible and that’s what it feels to be on stage, to be a rock star,” he continues. “So in the movie, you’re always on the stage.”
Metallica does share some history with Gaga, as well. They played together at the Grammys in 2017, but the performance was infamously marred by technical problems.
Hopefully Ally and Jackson don’t have to suffer any technical problems in A Star Is Born, which opens in theaters October 5.
