Blackened RecordingsMetallica‘s 1991 self-titled album, better known as The Black Album, has passed an impressive chart milestone that is certainly not sad but is definitely true. The record has now spent a historic total of 500 non-consecutive week on the Billboard 200.

Since the chart began publishing weekly in 1956, only three other albums have spent at least 500 weeks on the Billboard 200. Pink Floyd‘s The Dark Side of the Moon is the clear record-holder, with a total of 937 weeks, while Bob Marley and The Wailers‘ best of collection Legend and Journey‘s Greatest Hits have each tallied 539 weeks.

With singles such as “Enter Sandman,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “Wherever I May Roam,” The Black Album catapulted Metallica from metal heroes to world-conquering rock gods. The diamond-certified record is easily Metallica’s best-selling release, having sold over 16 million copies in the U.S.

Metallica is currently on tour behind the band’s latest album, 2016’s Hardwired…to Self-Destruct.
