Joan Jett on taking part in Nirvana reunion shows: “That's as close as I can maybe get to Kurt giving me the thumbs up”

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.comEarlier this month, the surviving members of Nirvana — drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist Pat Smear — reunited at Foo Fighters‘ CalJam festival. The trio was joined by Joan Jett, who handled lead vocals in place of the late Kurt Cobain, and she describes the experience as “very heavy.”

Back in 2014, Jett also joined the members of Nirvana at their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction performance and at a subsequent surprise club show in Brooklyn, New York. Speaking with NME, Jett says she’s felt “honored” and “humbled” to take part in each Nirvana reunion, and she’d be happy to play with them again should the opportunity arise.

“If they do [more shows] and they want me to be a part of it, I’d be honored to,” she says. “I feel blessed being asked when I was asked.”

Adds Joan, “It’s very heavy, though, because Kurt’s fans are intense and it’s a lot to take on. You just can never be sure if you’re doing right, but you can only do the best you can do and if the band asks me, that’s as close as I can maybe get to Kurt giving me the thumbs-up.”

During the CalJam performance, Jett sang “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Breed” and “All Apologies.”
