Kevin Mazur/WireImageBlack Sabbath will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards, held May 11 in Los Angeles.
The heavy metal pioneers are among seven recipients of the prize, which recognizes “performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording.” Sabbath in particular is being recognized for having “arguably invented the heavy metal signposts and influenced every heavy rock band that followed.”
“Each year, the Recording Academy has the distinct privilege of celebrating music industry giants who have greatly contributed to our cultural heritage,” says Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow. “This year, we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees and their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.”
In addition to Sabbath, the Lifetime Achievement Award recipients include funk legends George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, late jazz and soul singers Billy Eckstine and Donny Hathaway, Latin star Julio Iglesias, soul duo Sam & Dave, and R&B legend Dionne Warwick.
Black Sabbath played their final show February 2017. Ozzy Osbourne has been touring solo on his No More Tours 2 trek.
