ABC/Craig SjodinQueen and their current lead singer, Adam Lambert, made a big splash Sunday at the 2019 Oscars, opening the telecast with a performance of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions,” before before the movie Bohemian Rhapsody walked away with four trophies. Now, a two-hour documentary focusing on the group and its collaboration with Lambert will air on ABC on Monday, April 29, at 8 p.m. ET.
The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story will trace the history of how the British rock legends joined forces with the 2009 American Idol finalist to become a hugely successful touring entity years after the 1991 death of Mercury. The special will feature rare concert footage and portraits of the band members’ lives offstage.
The program includes new interviews with Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, Lambert and his parents, Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek, American Idol judge Simon Cowell and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
In addition, the documentary will offer parallel profiles of Queen and Lambert from the early 1990s until the moment that the band and Adam first performed together, during the 2009 finale of American Idol.
The Show Must Go On is being produced by longtime Queen manager Jim Beach and respected filmmaker Simon Lupton, who has worked on a variety of archival projects involving the band.
Queen + Adam Lambert will be hitting the road on a 2019 trek dubbed the Rhapsody tour, which kicks off July 10 in Vancouver, Canada, and is mapped out through an August 23 show in Charlotte, North Carolina.
