ABC/Randy HolmesFounding Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson has postponed his 12 scheduled June solo concerts to address some mental health issues he’s been experiencing following a recent operation on his back.

The 76-year-old Wilson posted a lengthy message on his official website noting that he’s undergone three back surgeries “in the last year or so,” and revealing that after the most recent one, he started feeling “mentally insecure.”

Brian, who has lived with mental illness for many years, explains, “We’re not sure what is causing it but I do know that it’s not good for me to be on the road right now, so I’m heading back to Los Angeles.”

Wilson points out that he had been feeling well as he did some recording in the studio and rehearsed with his band for the tour, but he then began “struggling with stuff in my head and saying things I don’t mean and I don’t know why.”

He maintains, “It’s something I’ve never dealt with before and we can’t quite figure it out just yet.”

As for his current plans, Wilson says, “I’m going to rest, recover and work with my doctors on this.” He adds, “I’m looking forward to my recovery and seeing everyone later in the year.”

The postponed dates were to have run from a show this Friday in Lynn, Massachusetts, through a June 23 concert in Aurora, Illinois.  Most of the shows were to have featured a full performance of The Beach Boys’ classic 1966 album Pet Sounds.

Wilson’s next confirmed show is an August 9 concert in Waterloo, New York, that’s billed as a “Greatest Hits Live!” gig.
