NonesuchThe cast album for ex-Talking Heads frontman David Byrne‘s new Broadway show American Utopia, a stage production based on his recent tour in support of his 2018 solo album of the same name, has been released digitally and via streaming services.
The show’s music includes selections from the American Utopia album, Talking Heads songs and tunes from Byrne’s earlier solo efforts and various collaborative projects, as well as a cover of the 2015 Janelle Monae protest song “Hell You Talmbout.”
Talking Heads tunes featured on David Byrne’s American Utopia on Broadway: Original Cast Recording include “This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody),” “Once in a Lifetime,” “Burning Down the House” and “Road to Nowhere,” backed by a variety of international singers and musicians.
A two-CD version of the album will be released on November 22, while a vinyl version will arrive sometime this winter. The CD and digital editions include one bonus track, a rendition of the 1980 Talking Heads song “The Great Curve.”
David Byrne’s American Utopia began a series of preview performances October 4 at the Hudson Theatre before the show’s official opening this past Saturday, October 20. The production is scheduled to run through January 19, 2020. As previously reported, the show features Byrne performing his songs while accompanied by an ensemble of percussionists, musicians and dancers who move freely about an empty stage.
Meanwhile, Byrne will be the musical guest tonight on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing a song from the American Utopia stage production with accompaniment from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. Then, on November 19, David and the American Utopia cast will perform on NBC’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
