Esoteric RecordingsA new five-CD box set featuring expanded versions of all four albums recorded by Eric Burdon‘s late-1960s incarnation of The Animals will be released on February 21, 2020.

When I Was Young — The MGM Recordings 1967-1968 includes remastered editions of 1967’s Winds of Change and 1968’s The Twain Shall Meet, Every One of Us and Love Is, plus a rare mono mix of Winds of Change.

After the original Animals lineup broke up in late 1966, Burdon formed a new version of the group under the moniker Eric Burdon & The Animals. The group’s first single, “When I Was Young,” was released in April 1967 and reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track wasn’t included on the band’s ensuing album, Winds of Change, which was issued in October 1967. The record featured the #9 hit “San Franciscan Nights” and a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “Paint It Black.”

The Twain Shall Meet was released in April 1968, and featured the top-20 hits “Sky Pilot” and “Monterey.”

Every One of Us was issued in August 1968, and didn’t yield any hit singles.

Eric Burdon & The Animals’ final album, Love Is, was released as a two-disc set in the U.S. in December 1968. Future Police guitarist Andy Summers had joined the band’s lineup prior to the recording of the album, which includes cover of Ike & Tina Turner‘s “River Deep – Mountain High,” Johnny Cash‘s “Ring of Fire” and The Bee Gees‘ “To Love Somebody.”

Among the box set’s bonus tracks are various single A-sides and B-sides, including “When I Was Young” and the two-part mono single edit of “Sky Pilot.” The collection comes packaged with a poster and a booklet featuring a new essay.
