ParlophoneA picture-disc version of David Bowie‘s 1972 album Space Oddity will be released on Friday, April 17.
The LP features the same famous Mick Rock-shot photos of David that appeared on the original release’s front and back covers on sides one and two, respectively.
The picture disc also includes a replica of the cover-image poster that was packaged with the original vinyl version of the album. The LP features the 40th anniversary remaster of the album that was released in 2009. Space Oddity was first issued in the U.K. in 1969 under the title David Bowie.
Space Oddity peaked at #16 on the Billboard 200, while the title track became Bowie’s first top-40 hit in the U.S., reaching #15 on the Hot 100.
In other news, a recent remix of the “Space Oddity” song in Sony’s immersive 360 Reality Audio music format is available today via Amazon HD using the Amazon Echo Studio device, and via Deezer and TIDAL using headphones.
360 Reality Audio allows a listener to experience music in 3D, as if they were at a concert, hearing the vocals and instruments virtually positioned in different locations in the room.
The mix, which was first introduced this past November, was created by longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti.
In a video interview with Visconti that premiered in conjunction with the debut of his remix, he noted, “When I first heard Sony 360 I was quite amazed. In the headphones it was remarkable how you could hear things behind you and above you…You might have heard ‘Space Oddity’ 200 times. When you hear this I guarantee you will listen another 200 times. It’s a new way of hearing the song.”
