ABC/Image Group LAGreen Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong has shared his take on “That Thing You Do!” for the latest edition of his weekly “No Fun Mondays” covers series.

“That Thing You Do!” was originally performed by the fictional band The Wonders in the 1996 Tom Hanks-directed film of the same name. It was written by Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger, who died earlier this month of COVID-19 complications.

“Today’s song is a tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger and the incredible music he wrote,” Armstrong says. You can listen to the cover streaming now on YouTube.

Each Monday, Armstrong has been releasing a new cover, which he plans to continue doing “until we’re let back out into the world.”

Previous covers include “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tommy James & the Shondells, “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” by Johnny Thunders, “Manic Monday” by The Bangles with Susanna Hoffs, and “Corpus Christi” by The Avengers.

Meanwhile, Armstrong performed his own song, Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” during Saturday’s star-studded One World: Together at Home special.
