Warren Haynes says Gov't Mule's new album finds band reflecting on the past while embracing the future

Fantasy Records/Concord Music GroupGov’t Mule, the jam-rock outfit fronted by ex-Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes, has just released Revolution Come…Revolution Go, its first new studio album since 2013’s Shout! and its first since the band celebrated its 20th anniversary. Haynes tells ABC Radio that his goal for the new album was to revisit Gov’t Mule’s beginnings, while also including “some stuff that’s different than anything we’ve ever done.”

The album’s politically themed title is reflected in several of the songs, including the title track and the opening tune, “Stone Cold Rage.” Haynes says “Revolution Come, Revolution Go” “kind of pokes fun of the lack of getting things done in our government,” while “Stone Cold Rage” is “about the divide and the anger that’s going on [now].”

Beyond observations about the world’s volatile political climate, Haynes maintains that the new album also offers a positive message, exemplified on the tune “Pressure Under Fire,” which he says evokes a ’60s-style philosophy of, “‘Hey, it’s up to us. The people have to come together.'”

Besides its political themes, Warren tells ABC Radio that most of Revolution Come…Revolution Go “is more of a personal reflection, [focusing on] one-on-one relationships [and] everyday life perspectives.”

Musically, the album explores a wide range of genres, including blues, soul, country-flavored Southern rock and psychedelia. Haynes says that diversity is by design and echoes Gov’t Mule’s live sets, which offer “a lot of different types of music, a lot of different moods.”

Known for being a musical multi-tasker, Haynes says Gov’t Mule will be his main focus for quite a while. The band currently is touring Europe, and has more than 40 North American dates lined up into October.
