Kevin Mazur/Getty ImagesPearl Jam and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron has shared the first preview of his forthcoming debut solo album with a new track called “Time Can’t Wait.” The song is streaming now at RollingStone.com.

“It’s a hard rock stomper, but got a little psychedelic tinge at the end,” Cameron tells Rolling Stone of “Time Can’t Wait.” “One of my main influences has always been [Pink Floyd‘s] Syd Barrett and this song has a weird sort of psychedelia in there like his music.”

Cameron himself provides the lead vocals for the album, which is titled Cavedweller. Given that he’s drummed for bands fronted by Eddie Vedder and the late Chris Cornell, the prospect of vocally striking out on his own was a little intimidating for him.

“The vocal aspect was the toughest part for me,” Cameron says. “I’m pretty limited in terms of what I can do, but it’s better for me to do it all as opposed to bringing in a real singer and doing it that way even though my vocal prowess is very limited in comparison to Chris and Eddie.”

Before Cornell passed in May, Cameron had a chance to play some of Cavedweller for him.

“He really liked it,” Cameron reveals. “He was always very supportive of me writing music for the band and kind of going for it. That was great. And I played some of it for Eddie and he really liked it, too. That felt great.”

Cavedweller will be released September 22. As for Pearl Jam, who hasn’t released an album since 2013’s Lightning Bolt, Cameron reports that the band is “still just kind of writing stuff right now.”

“We’re still in the beginning stages of everything,” he says, adding that Pearl Jam currently has no touring plans for next year.
